THIS SUMMER, THE OLD KMAQ FM-
TRANSMITTER GAVE UP THE GHOST. WE FOUND
ANOTHER OLD ONE IN DAVENPORT TO KEEP US ON THE AIR.
THE LIKE-NEW REPLACEMENT ONE FROM DUBUQUE
ARRIVED TODAY. IT IS BEING UNLOADED
ABOVE BY JOHN PORTER, TOM MESSERLI
AND MARK BECK. TOM (MAYOR) IS OUR
ENGINEER AT KMAQ AND JOHN HELPS HIM
WHEN NEEDED. TOM IS A FIREMEN
AND TALKED CHIEF BECK INTO HELPING MOVE
THE HEAVY TRANSMITTER FROM WHERE IT
RECENTLY WAS REPLACED BY A NEW ONE,
IN DUBUQUE. THAT STATION WANTED TO GO WITH
A DIGITAL TRANSMITTER AT THEIR NEW TOWER LOCATION.
OUR THANKS TO JOHN REGAN OF RCS
COMPUTERS AND APPLIANCES IN MAQUOKETA FOR
LETTING KMAQ USE HIS TOMMY-LIFT PICKUP.
SOON, IN A DAY OR TWO, THE ABOVE TRANSMITTER
WILL BE PUT ON-THE-AIR.
FROM NOW ON, WE WILL HAVE TWO FM
TRANSMITTERS, AS WE WILL KEEP
THE OLDER ONE WE HAVE BEEN USING FOR
EMERGENCY USE IN THE FUTURE.

JOHN PORTER OF MAQUOKETA, GUIDING
IT INTO THE SMALL BUILDING OUT AT THE
BASE OF OUR TOWER AT BRIDGEPORT,
JUST NORTHEAST OF MAQUOKETA A COUPLE
MILES. BRIDGEPORT WAS ONCE A PLOTTED
CITY AND HAD A ONE-ROOM SCHOOL AND
STILL HAS A CEMETERY. JONN, NOW A
RETIRED ELECTRONICS TECHNICIAN WHO
WORKED FOR THE STATE, WAS KMAQ'S
CHIEF ENGINEER IN THE 60'S WHEN KMAQ-
FM FIRST WENT ON-THE-AIR IN 1967.
JOHN'S MOTHER, BY THE WAY, WAS WELL
KNOWN IN MAQUOKETA AS SHE WROTE
FOR THE MAQUOKETA NEWSPAPER.
HER NAME WAS GLEE PORTER.
When you need to have something moved,
call PORTER, MESSERLI & BECK, LTD.
in Maquoketa.....pictured left to right.
Here they are, standing in front of KMAQ'S
low-milliage FM transmitter, ready to push
out the KMAQ programs in a day or two.
It's a 10 thousand watt transmitter, but
we can NOT run it at full power. Our
license is for 6kw. DENNIS VOY

MOSTLY CLOUDY TODAY....HIGH OF 71.
THE MAQUOKETA POLICE OFFICERS AND DISPATCHERS ARE ASKING FOR A 4.5%
WAGE INCREASE FOR NEXT YEAR. THE ATTORNEY REPRESENTING THEIR
UNION WENT OVER THE REQUESTS TUESDAY AFTERNOON AND THE CITY
IS EXPECTED TO GIVE ITS RESPONSE OCTOBER 5TH OR 6TH.
THE HOSPITAL HAS CLOSED ITS LONG-TERM CARE UNIT TO SAVE MONEY.
THE VERY NICE BUILDING WITH THE ATTRACTIVE ENTRANCE IS ONLY ABOUT
6 OR 7 YEARS OLD. THIS PAST TUESDAY, THE BOARD HEARD FROM
THEIR ARCHITECT WHO PROVIDED A LAY-OUT OF HOW THAT BUILDING WILL
NOW BE USED. MOVING INTO THE BUILDING: PHYSICAL THERAPY....CARDIAC
REHAB....AND THE FITNESS CENTER, ALL CURRENTLY IN AN OLD PART OF THE
HOSPITAL. THE ARCHITECT SAID THEY WILL EASILY BE ABLE TO RE-UTILIZE
THE SPACE AND NOT HAVE TO CHANGE A WHOLE LOT. ESTIMATED COST,
AROUND $250,000. PHASE FIVE OF THE CURRENT HOSPITAL PLAN CALLS FOR
RENOVATING OTHER SPACE IN THE HOSPITAL FOR THE SAME THREE
DEPARTMENTS, AT AN ESTIMATED COST OF $3 MILLION. SO, THE BOARD
WILL BE ABLE TO DO THIS MAJOR IMPROVEMENT AT THE HOSPITAL AT A
HUGE SAVINGS. PATIENTS WILL ENTER AT THE CURRENT LOCATION WHERE THERE IS THE VESTIBULE AND THERE WILL BE A RECEPTION AREA FOR ALL THREE DEPARTMENTS. CEO CURT COLEMAN SAID SPACE CONSTRAINTS FOR
PHYSICAL THERAPY WILL BE ELIMINATED BY THE LARGER SPACE IN THE
LONG-TERM CARE BUILDING. THE COURTYARD NEXT TO THE BUILDING
WILL BE USED FOR OUTDOOR PHYSICAL THERAPY SESSIONS. PLANS CALL FOR THE PROJECT TO BE BID IN LATE OCTOBER AND COMPLED BY MARCH OF NEXT YEAR. COLEMAN SAID THIS NEW PLAN FOR THE LONG-TERM CARE BUILDING
ALLOWS THE HOSPITAL TO TAKE A DEPARTMENT WHICH WAS NOT RECEIVING
COST BASED REIMBURSEMENTS FROM MEDICARE INTO A FACILITY WHICH WILL SEE
MEDICARE REIMBURSEMENTS. WHEN THE THREE DEPARTMENTS MOVE INTO THE NEW AREA, WHAT WILL GO INTO THEIR SPACE? IT WILL BE USED FOR MEDICAL
RECORDS, HUMAN RESOURCES AND STORAGE.
THE DIALYSIS DEPARTMENT STAYS....THE LONG-TERM CARE UNIT WILL BE
USED TO IMPROVE THREE DEPARTMENTS.....AND THE MEALS ON
WHEELS PROGRAM WILL NOT STOP IN MAQUOKETA. BY GOSH, MAYBE THIS
SUMMER'S DISAPPOINTED CITIZENS OF MAQUOKETA WILL START TO LIKE
THEIR HOSPITAL BOARD AND CEO ONCE AGAIN.
AND...WHO KNOWS....MAYBE THE BURNED OUT AREA OF DOWNTOWN MAQUOKETA WILL TURN OUT TO BE SOMETHING GOOD SOMEDAY TOO.
THIS WILL BE A BIG, HAPPY.....LOCAL AND NATIONAL.....CARDINAL WEEK. THE CARDINALS OF MAQUOKETA WILL WIN THEIR HOMECOMING GAME AND THE

MOSTLY CLOUDY TODAY...IN MID 70'S.
SOUNDS LIKE COULD BE A LITTLE WET FOR HOMECOMING DAY.
THE PARADE IS AT 2 FRIDAY AFTERNOON AND YOU CAN LISTEN TO IT
ON YOUR COMPUTER OR LAP TOP IF YOU LIVE OUTSIDE OUR COVERAGE AREA.... AND LISTEN TO THE GAME ON KMAQ TOO ON YOUR COMPUTER.
THE JACKSON COUNTY SENIOR CENTER WILL TAKE OVER THE MEALS ON WHEELS
PROGRAM IN MAQUOKETA, BEGINNING NOVEMBER 2ND. FOOD WILL BE
COOKED THERE. CURRENTLY, AND FOR ALL THE YEARS IN THE PAST, THE MEALS
HAVE BEEN PREPARED AT THE HOSPITAL. THE HOSPITAL ANNOUNCED IN JULY IT
WANTED TO STOP DOING IT TO SAVE MONEY. FOR MOST OF THE PAST YEARS,
IT WAS A 7-DAY A WEEK OPERATION. EARLIER THIS YEAR, IT WAS CUT DOWN TO
MONDAY-FRIDAY. UNDER THE NEW ARRANGEMENT, IT WILL STILL BE MONDAY-FRIDAY, BUT FROZEN MEALS WILL BE AVAILABLE TO PARTICIPANTS IF THEY DESIRE.
VOLUNTEERS WILL CONTINUE TO DELIVER THE MEALS. HERE'S A CHANGE.
THE SUGGESTED CONTRIBUTION WILL BE BETWEEN $3 AND $6.80 PER MEAL, DEPENDING ON INCOME.
ANNABELL HAAS, AGE 76, DIED AT HER HOME IN MT. CARROLL SUNDAY.
SURVIVORS INCLUDE TWO SISTERS IN MAQUOKETA, LULUBELL KOCH AND
EDNA MAE McDONALD.
A CORRECTION: RANDY SHADY'S NAME WILL NOT BE ON THE NOVEMBER BALLOT
FOR MAQUOKETA CITY COUNCIL BECAUSE HE DID NOT PROPERLY FILL OUT THE
NOMINATING PETITION. I INCORRECTLY SAID IT WAS BECAUSE HE FILED A FEW MINUTES LATE.
SO FAR, NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE TO THE EMPTY OLD FAREWAY BUILDING DOWNTOWN. NO WORD ON WHAT WILL IT BE USED FOR.
THANKS FOR THE VISIT AGAIN.

WE FINIALLY GOT SOME RAIN....OVER AN INCH TODAY,STARTING AROUND 3 THIS
MORNING. REST OF TODAY HAS BEEN MOSTLY CLOUDY AND MORE RAIN
IN EXPECTED ON AND OFF THE REST OF THE WEEK.
AL MOHR, MANAGER OF BARRON MOTOR SUPPLY IN MAQUOKETA, HAD A HOLE-IN-ONE AT THE MAQUOKETA COUNTRY CLUB SUNDAY, ON THE PAR-3, 177 YEAR NINTH
HOLE. HE USED A 7-WOOD. IN THE FOURSOME WERE CHUCK WILSON, AL
DENLINGER AND DALE KLOFT. FOR AL, HIS FIRST EVER, ALTHOUGH A FEW YEARS AGO, HE HAD AN EVEN MORE RARE DOUBLE-EAGLE ON NUMBER 5 ON THE SAME
COURSE. CONGRATULATIONS TO AL.
THIS NOTE: IN AN EARLIER DAILY REPORT, I REPORTED THAT RANDY SHADY
WAS RUNNING FOR A MAQUOKETA COUNCIL SEAT. NOT SO. HE FILED, BUT
AROUND 4 MINUTES LATE. AND SO HE IS WAS NOT AN ELIGIBLE CANDIDATE.
THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS TODAY DENIED A REQUEST FROM DAC, INC. TO ABATE AROUND $8,000 IN TAXES FOR LAST YEAR. THE SUPERVISORS
SAID IT WOULD SET A PRECEDENT FOR OTHER NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS.
AND THEY SAID PAPERWORK IS NOW IN PLACE SO DAC WILL NOT BE PAYING
PROPERTY TAXEX ON THE BUILDING IN THE FUTURE.'
AT THE CITY COUNCIL MEETING LAST NIGHT, THE COUNCIL CHANGED THEIR MINDS ON THE CAMPING PADS AT HORSESHOE POND PARK. BY A 3 TO 2 VOTE, THE MEMBERS APPROVED ELIMINATING EVERY OTHER CAMPING SITE IN THE
EXPANSION AREA TO PROVIDE MORE ROOM FOR AN RV TO PARK. BUT, SINCE
COUNCIL MEMBER MARGO SHOUSE WAS NOT AT MEETING, THE ISSUE COULD
BE BROUGHT UP AGAIN AS SHE HAS A RIGHT TO HAVE IT ON THE OCTOBER 5TH AGENDA AGAIN.

HER HOPE WAS TO MAKE 100, BUT IT WASN'T TO BE.
WE WILL ALL MISS HER!!

THESE DAYS, ANY POSITIVE THING ABOUT DOWNTOWN MAQUOKETA, I WILL BE PUT ON THIS REPORT. HERE IS A PHOTO I TOOK YESTERDAY OF THE FARM BUREAU
BUILDING, ON THE CORNER OF EAST PLATT AND OLIVE STREETS. THERE IS AN OPEN SPACE BETWEEN IT AND THE BUILDING TO THE WEST, WHICH IS OWNED BY
ALAN AND RHONDA PAPE. THEY HAVE DONE A LOT OF WORK ON THEIR BUILDING, PAINTING, ETC. THE EAST WALL WAS NOT ATTRACTIVE UNTIL IN AUGUST WHEN THEY COMPLETELY SIDED THE ENTIRE WALL WITH LIGHT BROWN BEIGE SIDING.
LOOKS VERY NICE! A BIG IMPROVEMENT. THANKS TO ALAN AND RHONDA!
THEY HAVE THEIR INSURANCE BUSINESS IN ONE HALF OF THE BUILDING....."SUPPLEMENTAL INSURANCE SERVICES".
