PAUL HAHLE, RECEIVED THE PRESIDENT'S AWARD FOR 2007 AT THE MAQUOKETA AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE BREAKFAST "ANNUAL MEETING" TUESDAY MORNING AT THE DECKER HOTEL. PAUL IS A LONGTIME MAQUOKETA BUSINESS
MAN, COMING TO TOWN ABOUT 30 YEARS AGO TO OWN AND OPERATE PRO TV AND APPLIANCE STORE ON THE CORNER OF WEST PLATT STREET, A BLOCK FROM MAIN. THE BUILDING NO LONGER THERE. NOW HE OWNS THE OLD LUMBER YARD ON EAST PLATT STREET, IN THE FORMER GREEN BAY LUMBER COMPANY BUILDING BUILT IN 1922. HE JUST COMPLETED A FOUR-YEAR TERM ON THE MAQUOKETA CITY COUNCIL DECEMBER 31ST. AS A MEMBER OF THE COUNCIL, HE PROVIDED A PIVOTAL ROLE IN THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE NEW YMCA BUILDING AND THE AIRPORT'S REVITALIZATION PROJECT. I RECALL WORKING ON A PROJECT WITH PAUL ABOUT 25 YEARS AGO. DOWNTOWN BUSINESMEN DECIDED THEY WANTED A MUSIC SYSTEM FOR DOWNTOWN, TO PLAY MUSIC FOR SHOPPERS. MATT OSTERHAUS AND I AND A COMMITTEE WE FORMED, RAISED MONEY FOR THE PROJECT AND WE WENT TO PAUL AND WE MAPPED OUT WHERE TO PUT ALL THE SPEAKERS. HE ORDERED AND INSTALLED THEM AT HIS COST. WE STILL USE THOSE SAME SPEAKERS TODAY. THE AMPLIFIER AND TAPE PLAYER IS IN THE KMAQ GARAGE AND WE TURN IT ON WEEKLY AND FOR SPEICAL OCCASIONS. I WAS AT THE MEETING TUESDAY AND JOKED THAT PAUL GAVE US A LIFETIME GUARANTEE ON THOSE SPEAKERS AND NOW, AFTER THE DOWNTOWN FIRE, TWO SPEAKERS DON'T WORK AND HE WILL HAVE TO REPLACE THEM. CONGRATULATIONS PAUL ON YOUR AWARD THIS WEEK. WELL DESERVED!
