THIS WAS THE WEEK FOR BOTH THE CLINTON AND JONES COUNTY FAIRS.
AND LEIGHTON HEPKER AND I DID REMOTE BROADCASTS FROM EACH FAIR EVERY
DAY. WE WERE BUSY. IN FACT, I HAVE ONE BROADCAST LEFT YET THIS AFTERNOON. RAIN WAS A PROBLEM AGAIN, ESPECIALLY FOR JONES COUNTY, AT THE MONTICELLO FAIR GROUNDS. THURSDAY NIGHT, THEY GOT NEARLY 2 INCHES OF RAIN AND THE JOSH TURNER COUNTRY SHOW WAS DELAYED TWO HOURS.
THEIR SATURDAY STOCK CAR RACES HAD TO BE CANCELLED AND LAST NIGHT,
MAJOR RAIN AGAIN AND I AM NOT SURE IF THEY GOT THE DIERKS BENTLY SHOW
ON ...OR ON TIME. WE DID NOT GET AS MUCH RAIN AS THEY DID. THIS MORNING,
IT IS CLOUDY AND HUMID AND WE ARE LOOKING FOR A HIGH TODAY IN MID 80'S.
RAGBRAI BIKE ACROSS IOWA STARTED THIS MORNING AND ENDS UP SATURDAY AT
LECLAIRE. THE BIX FESTIVAL IS NEXT WEEKEND IN DAVENPORT. AND
THE JACKSON COUNTY FAIR STARTS THIS WEDNESDAY NIGHT WITH THE PARADE.
SO, ANOTHER BUSY WEEK AHEAD. I WAS INVITED TO BE IN THE CLINTON COUNTY
FAIR "CELEBRITY STEER SHOW" AND THE PHOTO ABOVE IS ME WITH "BEEFIE".
I WAS IN THE RING A GOOD HALF HOUR....AND "BEEFIE" WAS GOOD FOR MOST OF THE TIME....BUT I HAD TO HOLD ON TO THE ROPE AND KEEP HIM IN LINE.
IT WAS A LOT HARDER THAT I EXPECTED. MY FIRST TIME AT SOMETHING LIKE
THIS. THE STEER BELONGED TO BRAD SPAIN OF NORTHEAST HIGH SCHOOL.
HE HELPED ME GET THROUGH THE JUDGING. NICE YOUNG MAN WHO WILL BE A FRESHMAN THIS YEAR. THERE WERE 19 OF US IN THE SHOW AND EACH OF US
WERE ASSIGNED A 4-H MEMBER AND HIS STEER. THE JUDGE WAS A LONGTIME
WELL KNOWN JUDGE FROM KEWANEE AND DID A GREAT JOB. MADE COMMENTS TO THE LARGE AUDIENCE ABOUT MY TIE. I TOLD HIM I WEAR A TIE 7 DAYS A WEEK. THURSDAY NIGHT, ALSO AT DEWITT, I WAS ASKED TO BE THE ESCORT FOR ONE OF THE FAIR QUEEN CANDIDATES, JOVON EBERHART OF DELMAR, AN MCHS GRAD AND A SENIOR A ST. AMBROSE. HAVE BEEN FRIENDS OF HER FAMILY FOR SEVERAL YEARS. SHE WAS SELECTED FAIR PRINCESS. THE QUEEN WAS FROM GRAND MOUND, WHO WILL BE A SENIOR AT CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL IN DEWITT.

MORNING. AS OF NOON TODAY, NO ONE HAS BEEN APPREHENDED.
SOMEONE TRIED TO BREAK INTO RONANN'S FLORAL SHOP ON HIGHWAY 64 WEST AND THE BURGLAR ALARM SOUNDED AT FLAPJACK RESTAURANT AND THIEVES DID NOT GAIN ENTRY AT EITHER PLACE. THE MAQUOKETA CITY COUNCIL MET WITH A DUBUQUE ATTORNEY IN CLOSED SESSION FOR NEARLY 40 MINUTES DURING A SPECIAL MEETING LATE YESTERDAY AFTERNOON. IN OPEN SESSION, THE COUNCIL VOTED TO PROCEED WITH THE DIRECTION DISCUSSED IN CLOSED SESSION. BUT THE MAYOR, CITY MANAGER, AND COUNCIL MEMBERS DECLINED TO SAY WHAT WAS HAPPENING. HOWEVER, IT IS MOST LIKELY THAT IT CONCERS A LEGAL ISSUE WITH THE HURST HOTEL APARTMENTS.

PRESTON WON THEIR GAME THIS MORNING AT THE STATE SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT IN FORT DODGE, 2 TO 0 , OVER FREMONT MILLS, AND CLAIMED 7TH PLACE IN THE STATE. KELCIE BORMAN, PRESTON'S ACE PITCHER, GAVE UP ONLYU 1 HIT AND STRUCK OUT 15. SHE WILL BE BACK NEXT YEAR, ALONG WITH MOST OF THE TEAM.

THE JACKSON COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS WERE TOLD MONDAY AFTERNOON THAT HUSCO WILL NOT BE BUYING THE COUNTY'S EMPTY BUILDING IN THE INDUSTRIAL PARK AND INSTEAD WILL LEASE 70,000 SQUARE FEET IN THE GENERAC BUILDING IN THE SOUTH EDGE OF MAQUOKETA INDUSTRIAL PARK. HUSCO MADE THE MOVE BECAUSE THEY SAW THE GENERAC BUILDING AS A PLACE FOR POTENTIAL GROWTH AND IT WOULD BETTER SUIT THEIR NEEDS NOW. THE BUILDING THEY HAD PLANNED TO BUY FROM THE COUNTY WAS ONLY 53,000 SQUARE FEET. PLANS CALL FOR THE PLANT TO OPEN IN AUGUST WITH 50 TO 100 PEOPLE AND A PROMISE OF 200 JOBS OVER THREE YEARS.

THE MAQUOKETA GIRLS WON A DOUBLE HEADER OVER VINTON SHELLSBURG YESTERDAY, THERE, BUT HERE IN TOWN, THE BOYS LOST BOTH OF THEIR GAMES
TO VINTON. THE GIRLS ARE HAVING A GOOD YEAR AND THE BOYS A BAD YEAR.

KEEP COOL.
