NICE TODAY..HIGH OF 84.
A RURAL MAQUOKETA COUPLE, PAM AND RANDY GARIEN, WILL GET THEIR HORSES, COUGARS AND DOGS BACK, BUT NOT THEIR BLACK BEAR. A SETTLEMENT WAS REACHED BY THEIR ATTORNEY, MARK LAWSON AND JACKSON COUNTY ATTORNEY, JOHN KIES. AND DR. JENNIFER DOLL, VETERINARIAN....AND KARLA SIBERT OF THE IOWA EQUINE RESCUE AND AWARENESS LEAGUE ARE BOTH UNHAPPY WITH THE AGREEMENT. DOLL SAID THE ANIMALS WERE IN BAD SHAPE WHEN SHE WAS FIRST CALLED TO THE GARIEN HOME AND SIBERT SAID YOU COULD SEE THE RIBS ON THE HORSES. NO CHARGES WILL BE FILED AND THE AGREEMENT CALLS FOR THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE TO INSPECT THE GARIEN PROPERTY FOUR TIMES IN THE NEXT YEAR AND CHECK THE ANIMALS. DOLL HAS THE 350 POUND BLACK BEAR IN HER GARAGE AND SAID HE HAS RAISED $6,000 TOWARD FINDING A PLACE FOR HIM TO LIVE. SHE HAS CALLED NUMEROUS PLACES AROUND THE COUNTRY TRYING TO FIND IT A HOME. AND THERE WERE FOUR COUGARS TAKEN AND ONE HAS SINCE DIED. TAKEN FROM THE PROPERT, 55 ANIMALS. THE GARIENS HAVE AGREED TO GIVE UP THE BEAR, TWO FOX, TWO CATS AND 15 CHICKENS. TO BE RETURNED TO THEM...11 HORSES, 3 COUGARS, 12 DOGS AND 8 PUPPIES. SHIRLEY SCHOLTES, PRESIDENT OF THE JACKSON COUNTY HUMANE SOCIETY SAID SHE WAS TOO DISAPPOINTED IN THE AGREEMENT TO COMMENT.
THE MAQUOKETA CITY COUNCIL LAST NIGHT SENT BACK THE PROPOSED ANIMAL ORDINANCE FOR FURTHER REVIEW. THE FIRST READING OF THE ORDINACE IS SCHEDULED NOW FOR THE AUGUST 21ST MEETING. ONE OF THE ISSUES IS HOW MANY DOGS AND CATS WILL A PERSON BE ABLE TO KEEP IN TOWN? AND
FOR THOSE WITH MORE THAN THE AMOUNT SPECIFIED, WILL THE CITY
"GRANDFATHER" THOSE SITUATIONS? STILL QUESTIONS TOO ON WALKING A DOG OR CAT AND LEASHING REQUIREMENTS.
