SUNNY AND HIGH TODAY IN THE LOW 40'S.

A BOY, BORN FRIDAY TO CHRIS AND AMY DAVIS OF LOST NATION, AT MERCY HOSPITAL IN IOWA CITY. GRANDPARENTS ARE BOYD AND RHONDA DAVIS OF MAQUOKETA.

THE MAQUOKETA BOYS PLAY DUBUQUE WAHLERT HERE TONIGHT IN TOURNAMENT BASKETBALL.

THE BELLEVUE GIRLS LOST TO TIPTON SATURDAY NIGHT, SO THERE WILL BE NO KMAQ-AREA GIRL'S TEAM AT THE STATE TOURNAMENT NEXT WEEK.

THE BRASCHLER MUSIC SHOW FROM BRANSON, FRIDAY NIGHT HERE IN MAQUOKETA, WAS A BIG SUCCESS. OVER 700 ATTENDED. SPONSORED BY KMAQ. THANKS FOR ATTENDING. THE GROUP ENJOYED THEIR VISIT, LIKED THE NEW OHWARD CENTER, STAYED AT THE COMFORT INN, AND WOULD LIKE TO COME BACK NEXT YEAR. WE PROBABLY WILL INVITE THEM.

MARCH 2ND IS THE BIRTHDAY OF ROBERT A. MILLIKAN, BORN IN MAQUOKETA IN 1868. THE NOBEL PRIZE WINNER WAS AN 1885 GRADUATE OF MAQUOKETA HIGH SCHOOL AND IN 1921 BECAME DIRECTOR OF THE CALIFORNIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY. HE IS BEST KNOWN FOR HIS WORK ON THE ISOLATION OF THE MEASUREMENT OF THE ELECTRON.
HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS STILL CONDUCT HIS OIL DROP EXPERIMENT.
ALBERT EINSTEIN WAS A STUDENT OF MILLIKAN.

DON HENNINGSON, WHEN YOU COMING HOME? IF SOON, WE WILL WAIT TO HAVE OUR NEXT PEARSON MEETING.

SHIRLEY MILLER DOWN IN ARIZONA, SAYS: THE JACKSON/CLINTON COUNTY POTLUCK WILL BE SUNDAY, MARCH 5TH AT THE SAME LaHACIENDA RESORT ON IRONWOOD AND 60 IN APACHE JUNCTION, STARTING AT 12 NOON. TRY AND ATTEND.

PETER BEZANSON, AGE 91, DIED SUNDAY AT MERCY HOSPITAL IN CEDAR RAPIDS. HIS MORRIS PLAN BOUGHT THE JACKSON STATE SAVINGS BANK IN THE EARLY 60'S...NOW US BANK. IN 1964 AND 1965 HIS BANK SPEAR-HEADED A DOWNTOWN MAQUOKETA PARKING LOT PROJECT....BUYING AND TEARING DOWN SEVERAL OLD BUILDINGS TO CREATE MORE PARKING FOR DOWNTOWN BUSINESS ESTABLISHMENTS. HE IS SURVIVED BY A SON IN IOWA CITY AND A DUAGHTER JUDY MAPLES RUTH, A FORMER MAQUOKETA RESIDENT AND NOW RESIDING IN LEASURE WORLD, ARIZONA.

THE TALK OF THE TOWN IN MAQUOKETA IS THE THAT THE JACK AND JILL STORE IN MAQUOKETA WILL CLOSE IN LESS THAN 3 WEEKS. THE STORE ANNOUNCED THE DECISION TO EMPLOYEES FRIDAY. IT WAS STARTED OVER 40 YEARS AGO BY BROTHER PAUL (DECEASED) AND FRANCIS SKEFFINGTON OF DEWITT, IN THE BUILDING THAT IS NOW THE SHOWROOM OF BRAD DEERY MOTORS. THE STORE MOVED TO A NEW BUILDING ON WEST PLATT OVER 30 YEAS AGO.
MAQUOKETA WILL CONTINUE TO HAVE THE FAREWAY STORE, THE NEARLY NEW DICK'S SUPER MARKET AND ALDI'S.....AND IN A YEAR WAL MART WILL HAVE A HUGE GROCERY STORE WITH THEIR REGULAR STORE.
SO, MANY ARE NOT SURPRISED AT JACK AND JILL CLOSING. IT HAS BEEN ABOUT 15 MONTHS SINCE DICK'S OPENED.

HERE ARE SOME THINGS BEING TALKED ABOUT. MOVE THE FIRE STATION TO JACK AND JILL. OR MOVE THE FIRE STATION AND POLICE STATION TO THE WAL MART STORE WHEN IT BECOMES EMPTY.
WORD IS, THE SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT IN WITH POLICE DEPARTMENT, COULD USE MORE SPACE. THERE HAS BEEN RUMOR THAT THEISEN'S WAS LOOKING AT (MAYBE ALREADY HAS PURCHASED) THE WAL MART STORE.
THE FOR SALE SIGN AT WAL MART IS GONE. IF FIRE DEPARTMENT MOVED, WHAT WOULD HAPPEN TO THAT BUILDING? A YOUTH CENTER WAS ONE SUGGESTION I HEARD. IS KFC THINKING ABOUT COMING BACK TO MAQUOKETA? THAT'S ALSO A RUMOR.
B & C LIQUOR IS MOVING TO THE FORMER CORNELIUS FARM STORE BUILDING ACROSS THE STREET, A MUCH LARGER BUILDING. FOR A FEW YEARS, IT WAS A NAPA AUTO PARTS STORE. A LITTLE DISCOUNT GROCERY STORE HAS BEEN IN THERE FOR OVER A YEAR AND SATURDAY, HAD AN AUCTION.

FLYNN IS MANAGER OF CENTURY READY MIXED CONCRET, JUST NORTH OF MAQUOKETA.

MAQUOKETA HAS AN ANIMAL CONTROL ORDINANCE THAT PROHIBITS PIT BULLS IN THE CITY. BROOKE SCHUMACHER AND ANDREW ROBERTS BROUGHT THEIR PET PIT BULL TO THE COUNCIL MEETING LAST NIGHT
AND MADE A PLEA TO THE COUNCIL TO LET THEM KEEP THEIR DOG THAT THEY HAVE HAD FOR 4 YEARS IN THE CITY. THE NOTICE TO GET RID OF THE DOG CAME AFTER THE POLICE RECEIVED A CALL ABOUT THE DOG.
OFFICER BRENDAN ZEIMET SAW ROBERTS WALKING THE DOG AND DISCOVERED IT WAS A PIT BULL. THE COUPLE APPEALED THE POLICE
ABATEMENT TO THE CITY MANAGER AND HE TOOK THE NEXT STEP, OF TAKING THE ISSUE TO THE CITY COUNCIL. SCHUMACHER, DID ALL THE TALKING (WHILE THE DOG WAS LYING AT THEIR FEET) AND GAVE A WELL PREPARED PRESENTATION TO THE COUNCIL, INCLUDING SOME FACTS ON PIT BULLS. ONE STATISTIC IT THAT THERE WERE 4.7 MILLION DOG BITES IN THE USA LAST YEAR AND ONLY 1 PERCENT OF THOSE WERE BY PIT BULLS. SHE CALLED HER DOG PRACTICALLY A KID. TO MAKE A LONG STORY SHORT, THE COUNCIL AGREED THE COUPLE COULD KEEP THEIR DOG, PENDING THE COUNCIL REVIEW OF THE ORDINANCE. THE GUESS IS.... THE CITY WILL REWORD THE ORDINANCE AND NOT SPECIFY BREEDS OF DOGS IN IT.
