GARY GRUENWALD, A 1971 GRADUATE OF MAQUOKETA HIGH SCHOOL, WAS IN TO SEE ME A COUPLE WEEKS AGO. HE VISITS HIS PARENTS IN MAQUOKETA ABOUT ONCE A YEAR.
HE LIVES IN VENICE, ITALY AND HAS FOR MANY YEARS. HIS SON, DAVID, AND ANOTHER MAN, AN ITALIAN, WERE
PRESENTED SILVER AND GOLD MEDALS FOR ACTS OF HEROISM. THE AWARDS WERE GIVEN BY ORDERS OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC. BACK IN THE SUMMER OF 2001, DAVID AND THE OTHER MAN, ON A SUNDAY AFTERNOON, CAME ACROSS AN ACCIDENT. TWO YOUNG MEN, COUSINS, FROM NAPLES, WERE TRAVELING IN AN OPEL CAR AND LOST CONTROL ON A CURVE, HIT THE PROTECTIVE WALL SEPARATING THE ROAD FROM THE SILE RIVER, AND ENDED UP SUBMERGED ABOUT 15 YARDS FROM SHORE. DAVID WAS RETURNING HOME AND SAW SEVERAL PEOPLE STANDING ON THE SHORE LOOKING OUT IN THE RIVER. SO HE STOPPED HIS CAR TO SEE WHAT HAPPENED. ALL HE SAW WAS THE REAR BUMPER OF THE SUBMERGED CAR. ONE OF THE COUSINS BROKE THE SURFACE OF THE WATER AND YELLED FOR HELP. DAVID AND THE OTHER MAN, JUMPED IN AND ASSISTED THE MAN TO SHORE. THE MAN THEN GOT THE MESSAGE TO THEM THAT ANOTHER PERSON WAS STILL IN THE CAR UNDER WATER AND THE TWO MEN DIVED IN AGAIN AND BACK TO THE CAR WHERE DAVID FOUND AND OPENED ONE OF THE BACK DOORS, ENTERED THE CAR, UNLATCHED THE SEAT BELT AND YANKED HIM FROM THE CAR AND GOT HIM TO SHORE AND APPLIED CPR TECHNIQUES. BOTH COUSINS WERE IN CRITICAL CONDITION AND IT WAS NOT UNTIL TWO YEARS LATER THAT BOTH WERE ABLE TO RETURN TO THEIR JOBS. DAVID WAS A COOK AT THE TIME AND NOW IS SELLING PRODUCTS IN THE WINE INDUSTRY IN ITALY AND CALIFORNIA. HIS FATHER, GARY, IS THE SONE OF LYLE AND LOIS GRUENWALD OF MAQUOKETA. HIS WIFE ADRIANA IF A NATIVE OF ITALY. IF YOU KNOW GARY AND WOULD LIKE HIS EMAIL ADRESS, EMAIL ME AT KMAQ@KMAQ.COM.
THANKS FOR STOPPING BY.
